چکیده

The basic pathogenesis of the septic syndrome is a physiological response going beyond control. When organisms infect the body the first line of defence is the interaction with the hosts innate defence system comprising of polymorphs and the various chemicals. In evolutionary terms this defence system has been well conserved with minor alterations up the phylogenetic tree. When looked as a broad biological system this provides definite survival advantage, but sometimes the interaction may be too violent for the overall well being of the individual.

Sepsis and meningoencephalitis due to Rhodotorula glutinis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus, diagnosed at autopsy.

Rhodotorula species have been reported as a causative agent of opportunistic mycoses in immunocompromised hosts. We report a case of sepsis and meningoencephalitis caused by Rhodotorula glutinis in a 20-year-old female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which was diagnosed at autopsy. The patient presented with longstanding fever. She was diagnosed with SLE after admission to the ...

Non-otogenic cerebral abscess.

Non-otogenic cerebral abscess is becoming relatively more frequent compared with otogenic. It arises in a setting of sepsis, trauma, or congenital heart disease. The onset presents a meningo-encephalitic picture, often with two stages, followed by epilepsy and/or a hemiparesis. The best investigations are an EEG and, probably, an isotope scan. The angiogram may be misleading as 40% may not have...

Intramedullary abscess--a rare complication of spinal dysraphism.

Two cases are reported of patients with spinal dysraphism who developed abscesses within the spinal cord. In one case the infection had spread to the cord through a dermal sinus, as in the six cases previously recorded in the literature. In the other patient the sepsis developed within an intramedullary epidermoid tumour, but the route of infection was not clear. Each patient made a virtually f...
